About the Colorado Psychiatric Society

CPS is a district branch of the American Psychiatric Association with approximately 450 psychiatrists who practice throughout the state of Colorado. Our members are physicians who have completed medical school and a psychiatric residency program. Some have received additional training in areas such as child psychiatry, geriatrics, forensics, or addictions. CPS takes part in activities such as: legislative and lobbying efforts; advocacy for the welfare of patients in the public and private sectors; educational meetings; public information projects directed toward students, the media and the general public; investigation into ethics complaints; informing members of current issues through our newsletter and other correspondence; responding to needs in our community including disaster preparedness; participating in coalitions with other mental health organizations and consumer groups; and providing leadership in areas of concern to our members.

Mission Statement

The Colorado Psychiatric Society is an association of physicians whose mission is to promote excellence in psychiatric care through advocacy, education, and research.

What We Do

  • Advocacy for You, Your Patients and the Profession: The CPS Legislative Committee and our lobby firm Mendez, Barkis, & Associates work on legislation concerning mental health and medical issues.
  • Member Support: The CPS office provides personal attention and assistance to help members navigate professional situations and find information.
  • Find a Psychiatrist Service: The CPS office connects the public with members who have availability for new patients.
  • Educational Seminars on Timely Topics and Social Events: Our annual educational meetings on exciting topics also provide an opportunity for networking, socializing and honoring members. In addition, we host an annual Winter Party solely dedicated to fun and building connections with the community.
  • Leadership Opportunities: CPS members have numerous opportunities for leadership roles with the Society by serving on our Executive Council and participating in various committees such as the Legislative, DEIA, Ethics, Finance & Membership, Program, and Public Information and Education Committees. Members also represent CPS by serving on important state and legislative commissions and task forces.
  • CPS Quarterly Newsletter, Updates and Website: CPS communications offer information on pressing topics, upcoming events and general resources for members.
  • Ethics: CPS is committed to upholding the integrity of the profession through education of members and resolution of ethical issues that are brought to the Society.
